1. Clean the grill

Most charcoal grills have parts which are easy to clean, just wipe them clean before you start your grilling process. Remove the grate from the grill so that you can reach hard to reach areas. 2. Open vents at the bottom of the grill
Vents allow air to circulate in the grill. To allow plenty air flow in the grill, then you need to open the vents so that charcoal will burn with enough heat. In most cases, the ashes tend to block the vents. After you remove the grate, use a stick to scoop open vents which have been blocked. After the grill vents are all open, then return the grill grate and have the grill ready to receive charcoal. If there are small pieces of charcoal blocking the vents, use tongs to pull them out so that the vents will allow in enough air for your charcoal to burn with enough heat to cook your favorite food.
3. Arrange the charcoal briquettes on the grill
The charcoal briquettes should be hot before you start your grilling session. For the charcoal to heat efficiently, arrange it in a pyramid shape on the bottom of the grill. Avoid adding a grilling grip till the charcoal is red hot hence ready to cook the food. The arrangement of the charcoal will be determined by the type of food you intend to cook. If you prefer thick pieces of meat, then the charcoal should have thick layers to produce the necessary temperature.
4. Add lighter fluid to the charcoal briquettes

5. Light the charcoal
Now that you have enough fluid charcoal lighter, the next step you need to take is to turn on the coal. Use a long lighter or a match stick which is long sufficiently to light the charcoal. Wait for about 15 minutes so that the charcoal will be hot enough to cook your food. Through observation, you should wait and have the ash cover the charcoal glowing red. Avoid cooking on charcoal which does not have enough heat because they will fail to cook the food well. Red glowing coal indicates readiness for your grilling job.
6. Spread the charcoal at the bottom of the grill
The way you will spread the charcoal will determine the type of food you are about to prepare. The briquettes should be spread wider at the base of the grill more than the extent to which food cover on the grill. Use spatula or tongs top spread the charcoal on the bottom of your charcoal grill. If you like to prepare thinner meat, then you need to spread the charcoal evenly on the grill bottom. If you prefer cooking thicker meat, and then make charcoal higher on one side that the other. After cooking the outside of the thicker meat on high charcoal, then you can proceed and finish cooking on the lower side of the charcoal.
7. Replace the grilling grate
